These are the 1,300mph supersonic airliners hailed as the ?new Concorde? that will cut travel times by almost half. United Airlines has announced a deal to buy 15 ?Overture? aircraft from aerospace company Boom Supersonic in a move it says ?represents a leap forward in returning supersonic speeds to aviation?. According to United, Overture is capable of travelling twice the speed of today?s fastest airliners and will connect more than 500 destinations in nearly half the time. Flight times between New York City and London could be slashed from six-and-a-half hours to just three-and-a-half. San Francisco to Tokyo could take six hours instead of the current 10 hours and 15 minutes. The only thing that will take time is waiting for the planes to be ready. Overture is expected to fly in 2026 and to carry passengers by 2029. United says Overture is expected to be the first large commercial aircraft to be net-zero carbon from day one, optimized to run on 100 per cent sustainable aviation fuel. The deal with Denver-based Boom Supersonic includes an option for a further 35 planes. Concorde, the last supersonic passenger jet, entered service in 1976 and continued flying for 27 years. 03 Jun 2021 Pictured: Overture supersonic airliner.
