Aug 24, 1961 - Punta del Este, Uruguay - By the time ERNESTO GUEVARA, known to us as Che, was murdered in the jungles of Bolivia in October 1967, he was already a legend to my generation, not only in Latin America but also around the world. Like so many epics, the story of the obscure Argentine doctor who abandoned his profession and his native land to pursue the emancipation of the poor of the earth began with a voyage. In 1956, along with Fidel Castro and a handful of others, he had crossed the Caribbean in the rickety yacht Granma on the mad mission of invading Cuba and overthrowing the dictator Fulgencio Batista. A bit over two years later, after a guerrilla campaign in which Guevara displayed such outrageous bravery and skill that he was named comandante, the insurgents entered Havana and launched what was to become the first and only victorious socialist revolution in the Americas. Photograph taken on the early 60's of Commander Raul Castro (R) and Commander Ernesto "Che" Guevara in Havana. Pressure mounted 03 August 2006 on Raul Castro to demonstrate he is in control as Cuba's interim leader, with his absence from public view fueling fears of a power vacuum three days after he took over from his brother Fidel. Instead of any address by midday, there was old news from Raul Castro, until now the defense chief, in the form of his July 1 address on legitimacy in Cuba's leadership, re-run in the Communist Party newspaper, Granma. In power since 1959, a message attributed to Fidel Castro, who would turn 80 on August 13, said he would be out for "several weeks of rest" following an operation to stem intestinal bleeding.

Jan 01, 1960 - Punta del Este, Uruguay - By the time ERNESTO GUEVARA, known to us as Che, was murdered in the jungles of Bolivia in October 1967, he was already a legend to my generation, not only in Latin America but also around the world.
