July 22, 2004, La Higuera, Bolivia: Almost forty years after his death in 1967, Che Guevara's status as a cultural icon is gaining momentum with the release of a string of new movies documenting his life and celebrating his legend. "The Motorcycle Diaries," coming to American audiences in September, is a Robert Redford-produced account of Guevara's youthful escapades in South America, based on Guevara's book of the same name, and starring the rising Mexican star Gael Garcia Bernal. The film was directed by Walter Salles, and has won applause both in Cuba and at the Cannes Film Festival. According to the film's producer Paul Webster, it has little to do with communism and everything to do with Che's status as a mythic cultural figure: "The Che of 'The Motorcycle Diaries' is more akin to Jack Kerouac or Neal Casady than Marx or Lenin. He was naturally drawn to the peripatetic lifestyle that defined the 50's and 60's, that sense of constant motion and adventure that began with the Beats... The film gives you a glimpse of the young, idealistic Ernesto Guevara before he became Che, the legend." Meanwhile, at least two other films about Guevara are currently in development, one directed by Steven Soderbergh, and rumoured to star Benicio del Toro, the other a vehicle for Antonio Banderas, who has already played Che in "Evita." These are the first major films to deal with Guevara in a generation, and are sure to bring Guevara's legend to a wider audience. Guevara's image is particularly potent in Latin America, where he his legacy holds him as a secular saint. There, images of Guevara are equally likely to be seen at tourist shops and protests, with his face representing freedom, rebellion, or hostility towards the US. Bolivian children pose for a picture in front of a giant bust of Che Guevara in the town of La Higuera, where he was captured and killed. Jul 15, 1968 - Havana, CUBA - A Cuban revolutionary leader who led his country from January 1959 until his retirement in February 2008, FIDEL CASTRO transformed Cuba into the first communist state in the Western Hemisphere. Although the US has tried hard to get rid of him, President Castro outlasted no fewer than nine American presidents since he took power in 1959. He has remained Cuba's dictatorial ruler for so long that nearly three-quarters of its people have known no other leader.
